Iranian Fashion

After reading Persepolis, I started to wonder about the dress of the Iranian women when I came across and interesting article from 2007. It's some what like the article that Krutika found on the women from the polygamous sect that started their own clothing line, but involves Iranian fashion. In 2007 for the first time they have allowed Iranian models to walk the runway in their traditional dress, but they've put a little twist on it. Using bright colors and different fabrics, they've tried to make their dress brighter and more attractive. Many people are not happy with the new changes and feel that the younger generation was never "properly educated". I thought it was a interesting article and it reminded me a little of Marji in Persepolis with her jean jacket, Michael Jackson pin, and Nike tennis shoes!

Very interesting article. I thought the "fashion police" putting on their own show was inventive. Using cardboard cutouts to show what a proper Iranian woman should wear.

In the comments under the article I was amazed at the variety in the comments from acceptance to the changes to anger.

The following comment surprised me. The idea that these "western mode" clothes were the biggest problem for women in Iran.

"Here in iran every kind of clothes that are formal in humanitarian values can be worn. But many women do follow western mode (unfortunately) and it's the biggest problem in Iran about women.

I agree with Lydia. This article is quite interesting. I can see how western clothes can be a problem though. It is the same in India; western clother are considered quite revealing and modern. Parents in Asian countries are sceptical about their kids being influenced by this. Even today, my mother apprives the clothing I buy
