Hiring Women in the Workplace in 1943

I was doing some research for my paper a couple days ago and I found this article. It's really an article within an article from 1943 with 11 tips on how to hire the right woman for a job. These tips are the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! One of them says to pick young married women because they have more of a sense of responsibility and they're less likely to be flirtatious than unmarried women. It's really sad to see how men viewed women when they were first coming into the workplace. Thought you might all get a laugh out of these tips as I did!

this is so funny and ridiculous at the same time. It makes me think if employers have a secret checklist somewhere evaluating our mental status...

This is absolutely hilarious. It definitely brightened by evening up. I really like number four on the list "retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination- one covering female conditions."

wow this is really ridiculous. if you hire an older women make sure she has worked before because older women are fussy. I must say though that my favorite part of this article is the one about giving women a lot more breaks during the day because we'll be happier if we can tidy our hair and re-apply lipstick and wash my hands. heaven forbid i were to show up in the workforce like i do now, hair in a ponytail and i can't say i have ever worn lipstick to my job.

It is fascinating that the helpful hints for women in the workplace were published a little over sixty years ago. And, it is good to know that we have come along way from those times. I find that hint number 6 to be particularly sad. The one that states that you should have a long list of work for women to do so they wouldn’t be a bother to management. It seems like it is saying that a women would have no clue what to do if a man wasn’t around to give them a certain job or task. Some of the most driven and hardest workers I know are women, my mom being one of them. But, it is good to know that within sixty years stigmas of women working have mostly faded away. Well, I hope anyway.

have any of you seen an old betty crocker cookbook? My mom has one from when she was first married. It includes tips for housewives -- like that you should put the kids to bed before your hubby gets home so that they won't disturb him, and that you should freshen yourself up (lipstick, again), and have interesting topics of conversation that won't tax him after his long day, but will show that you are interesting. i tried to find it online but can't. REALLY interesting, though!
