"Weighing the Health Benefits of Birth Control"
Here's an excerpt:
Unveiled in 1960, the birth control pill revolutionized contraception. Yet despite an abundance of birth control options today, almost half the pregnancies in this country are unintended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than in any other developed nation. What’s the reason?
The issue is not technology. But economics and human behavior are another story. Nearly a third of women who start a new type of birth control stop within a year, according to one recent study, largely because of changes in their insurance coverage. All methods have some side effects. And the current crop of intrauterine devices, or IUD’s, despite having a nearly perfect efficacy rate, have been slow to catch on, experts say, partly because more doctors need to be trained in inserting them.

That statistic is absolutely crazy, I can't believe that almost half of the pregnancies here are unwanted. We have all these freedoms in the US as women, but because they are expensive women can't take advantage of them. My insurance company stopped covering my birth control so I had to switch because I couldn't afford it. Its insane that even in the United States, we can't help women out who want birth control. They are attempting to be responsible but can't because of financial situations.
After reading this entire article I find there to be some things that were really quite interesting. I can in a way see where almost half of pregnancies are unintended. They are unintended but in some of those cases they may not be unwanted. I to have has some of those same issues with birth control and having to change prescriptions because I could not afford the one I was on but I was lucky in that my doctor prescribes me the one where he gets samples so I am not left high and dry and he attempts to give me as many samples as he has and the rest I get through precriptions. The rest of the article from what I understood was just a whole lot of random talk about all the birth control pills out there and I must say that made me consider this article in a new light. We may be complaining because some women can not get birth control in the US but there are health clinics that will help you get these for a decent price. Also look at all the options that we have when it comes to birth control we have pills, IUDs, patches, rings, etc. Now think about other countries out there that do not get these options at all. Some women in the US can't afford some of these things but just think about other countries where not only can they not afford them but they do not even have a choice, they may not even know what some of these things are. SO yeah we may be slightly hard up with birth control in the US but at least we have options.
